Prof. Zhouchen Lin received the Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics from Peking University in 2000. He is currently a Professor at Key Laboratory of Machine Perception (MOE), School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science, Peking University. His research interests include computer vision, image processing, machine learning, pattern recognition, and numerical optimization. He is an area chair of CVPR 2014/2016, ICCV 2015 and NIPS 2015 and a senior program committee member of AAAI 2016/2017 and IJCAI 2016. He is an associate editor of IEEE Trans. Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence and International J. Computer Vision.
Title: Applications of Mathematics in Computer Vision by Examples
Abstract: Mathematics is the foundation of many scientific and technological subjects, including artificial intelligence. However, many students may not be actively in learning mathematics. One of the major reasons may be that they do not know how mathematics can be applied to real problems. In this talk, based on my own expertise I give examples of applications of mathematics in computer vision. The exemplar mathematics include: linear algebra, graph theory, statistics, partial differential equations, etc.
Title: How to have a successful graduate life?
Abstract: Most of the graduate students do not know why and how they should pursuit their graduate degrees. This leads to their unsuccessful graduate lives: either aimlessly, or ineffectively, or inefficiently. In this talk, I will give some guidance towards a successful graduate life.
